Mandy James with infant Walter Eugene Woods. Walter was born on April 13, 1911. His father was Charles M. Woods(Charlie Woods) and his mother was Bertie Woods (Lilly Bertie James). Walter was the last child to be born at Avalon before the mill fire. This photograph was taken on June 15, 1911, the day of the mill fire, by Jesse G. Seay, a photographer from Leaksville. At the end of the day, Jesse was walking the railway tracks toward Mayodan when he turned around and saw smoke billowing from the roof of the mill. He quickly set up his camera and proceeded to take pictures. Most if not all of the photos we have of the mill fire can be attributed to Jesse Seay and C.B. Daniels.
